His pop beats were part of the signature sounds of the late 80s and early 90s. He shot to fame after his single “Never Gonna Give You Up” became a number one hit. His big voice and soulful singing had people thinking he was African American. The lanky redhead later became known as the white guy with the big voice after appearing on TV (and after being wrongly accused of lipsyncing his way to fame).

After dishing a slew of pop hits, he shifted to more soulful music in the next decade and then retired at 27 to focus on family. He later resurfaced, thanks to “rickrolling,” and released an album, “50,” which topped the UK charts.
