Curly Hair? Don’t Care! 5 Life-Hacks For Frizzy Hair
Having curly or wavy hair can be a total burden for some people. It can take such a long time to straighten or style it. Even after all that work, there is the chore of keeping it dry when you take a shower or go swimming. Let’s not forget all the trouble that comes when your hair gets frizzy and dry.
Flat ironing your hair to get the sleek straight look is also a hustle. Do it too often and your hair is slowly damaged despite using heat protective sprays. Getting it professionally straightened is a costly affair that only lasts a couple months. What to do?
Not to worry. Here are 5 helpful tips on how to tame your curly and wavy hair.
1. Protect Your Curly Hair While You’re Sleeping
Curly hair is beautiful; you just need to know how to care for it, even while you are asleep. There are two ways you can preserve your luscious curls at night. The first is to sleep on a satin pillowcase. A satin case will keep the moisture locked into your hair and not suck it out like a cotton pillowcase.
The other alternative is to wear your hair in a two side braid so that even if you move about while you are sleeping, your hair stays put. This is great if you don’t have a satin pillowcase since all you have to do is remove the braid the following morning. Always remember to use a wide tooth comb when detangling curly hair. You should comb your hair from the tips up to the roots and not the other way around. Never use a brush because it will just tangle it even more.
2. Deep Conditioning Is A MUST
You should deep condition your hair at least once a week to keep it looking gorgeous and shiny. First and foremost, you will need to select the right conditioner for your hair. Choose a conditioner that is thick and rich so that it keeps your hair hydrated. A lightweight conditioner doesn’t really work on curly hair.
When applying the deep conditioner onto your hair, place it on damp hair and then cover it with a shower cap, or a Saran Wrap, or even a damp towel. Keep the conditioner in your hair for 15-20 minutes then wash it out. Then proceed to style your hair as desired.
Sleeping with your deep conditioner in your hair is also perfectly fine. The heat from your head helps the conditioner penetrate your follicles, especially when you use a shower cap. However, this technique is not for everyone. If you have thin and over moisturized hair, then rather keep the product in for a few minutes and not overnight.
3. AVOID Wrapping Your Hair In A Towel.
Rubbing your wet hair with a towel causes unnecessary friction that damages curly and wavy hair. So right after a shower, don’t wrap your head in a towel; instead just squeeze the excess water using your hands. Another great option is to use a cotton t-shirt because it doesn’t frizz your hair as you dry the excess water.
4. STOP Touching Your Hair
FACT: The more you play with your hair, the frizzier it gets and while your hair may feel good between your fingers, you are actually creating friction and causing your hair cuticles to ruffle. Hence, your hair frizzes. Also, minimize the amount of styling you do to your hair. This will limit the time you spend touching your hair and consequently reduce frizzing. To help extend the longevity of a hairstyle, add some hair mousse to your hair.
5. Limiting The Effects Of Humidity
Humidity is the reason for all those “bad hair days.” Here are some ways you can avoid such days. First, minimize the use of a blower or hair straightener when it is humid, as it will just add more frizz. Secondly, you can just put your hair up for the day to actually avoid all of the dirt and humidity. And if you’re living in the city or a tropical country, minimize the effects of humidity by applying some coconut oil or spray some oil mist after a shower.
