5 Things You Should Not Do in the Morning, No. 4 Will Surprise You
For us to be happier and more productive all day long, our mornings must really be awesome as starting it off on a wrong foot messes up our entire day – causing us more stress and depression.
And since we believe that a morning routine is paramount to productivity and success, we pull off still pull off some not-so-good things we usually do in the morning. So when we finally dare to stop doing these unhealthy morning habits, expect one great day ahead.
1. Hitting the Snooze Button
The temptation of “please give me another five or ten more minutes” seems to be really inevitable. But the keystone of a solid morning routine is to actually get up when the alarm goes off: no complaining, no hitting snooze. Here’s the thing: Get our feet on the ground, be grateful, do our healthy morning routines, and start our day right.
2. Checking Our Phone
Whether we check our e-mails, text messages, or even our social media accounts, we should make it a habit not to grasp our mobile phones right after we open our eyes. Doing so can send us into “panic mode” even before our day has even begun.
Psychologist Susan Bartell said in an interview that this practice sets our day off to a negative start, which we all don’t want to happen. So let’s do ourselves a favor and stop checking. Our inbox and social media accounts can surely wait for the next couple of hours.
3. Leaving Our Bed Unmade
Listed as one of the most effective morning habits of highly productive people, making our bed every morning right before we head outside our room may be the best way to start off our day. Doing this gives us a little sense of pride and satisfaction as we’ve accomplished the first task of the day – thus encouraging us to do another task.
According to Charles Duhigg, author of The Power of Habit and Smarter Faster Better, making our bed is a “cornerstone habit” that can spark “chain reactions that help other good habits take hold.”
4. Brushing Our Teeth after Breakfast
Most of us have grown up with the belief that the best time to brush our teeth is right after we eat. Common sense would dictate that brushing our teeth after eating breakfast is good because we generally clean off all the stuff and gunk from our meal. What’s really best for our teeth is actually counter-intuitive: brushing our teeth right after eating can actually do a lot more harm than good.
Yes, let’s take it from the experts. We’re better off brushing beforehand or waiting 30 minutes after we eat. Brushing our teeth after breakfast can push sugars to the surface of our teeth and eventually erode our enamel. Likewise, the bacteria in our mouth produce acids when we eat and this weakens our teeth’s enamel. And if we brush our teeth while they’re in this ‘weakened state’, we can actually remove the enamel from the surfaces of our teeth, which eventually can cause significant enamel loss.
5. Failing to Have Some Workouts
Regular exercise is really vital in achieving optimum wellness. There should be no excuse to not having thee time and the means to exercise in the morning. Getting our crunches and drills out of the way first thing in the morning can be a useful psychological trick. This is especially true since we find it a lot easier bail on the gym at night after the office.
However, doing this can also gradually affect our will and discipline to keep up with our usual schedule. The best bet is to wake up a little earlier and work out in the morning. A 15-minute session of morning drills can do wonders and eventually can help us accomplish an entire routine.
With all these tricks, we’d surely become more energized, optimistic, and productive all day long. Have a great day ahead, folks!
