A Special Kind of Service Animal

Not all dogs are born with the remarkable ability to sense episodes, which is required to be considered as a seizure alert dog. This is what sets them apart from all other kinds of service animals. Sharon Hermansen, who founded the Canine Seizure Assist Society of North Carolina, had once trained dogs for tracking, obedience, search-and-rescue, and even drug searches. But she had never encountered a seizure-assist dog until the ‘90s. Back in those days, she was one of the few people who were able to train them. Now, the society she had put up is already recognized by the Epilepsy Foundation.
