In order to get into the cavern, John needed to find a way not to place his weight on the stairs as they could crumble beneath his weight and cause him harm. The shaft was too narrow for him to simply jump into, and it seemed rather deep, too. Also, he didn’t want to risk open wounds from the rusty blades of the staircase that could scrape him as he slipped past. So John thought of a simple but genius idea – he inserted a ladder carefully down the shaft. In wild excitement, he descended the ladder.
